Title Tags: Common Mistakes and Solutions

The title tag (the description that appears on the top of the browser) is one of the most important factors for websites or blogs. You need to be careful about it to get good result from your blog or website. There are some common mistakes that many webmasters commit when creating the title tag.

Many webmasters use a single title tag for all the pages throughout the site. Usually they use the blog name as the title tag for every page. As a result when a visitor visits a single page then that visitor knows which website or blog he or she is in. But this must be avoided. The title of a page should match the content inside it. You need to have specific title tag for every page of your website.

Suppose you are using the title tag Malik’s Blog on every single page of your website or blog. Then, if you have a post on Fear – A Friend of Yours the title tag for this post will be Malik’s Blog. Look, your title tag is not related to your post. It’s not describing the post and there is no keyword match. It would be better to use Fear – A Friend of Yours as the title tag for that page. Makeyour title tag equal to the post title rather than the blog title.

Another thing that many webmasters do is to include too many keywords in the title tag. They hope that search engines will take all of the keywords into consideration and they will get better search engine results. But this is a great mistake. This should be avoided as search engines put value on title keywords depending on the number of keywords used. The result is that the higher the number of keywords the smaller the value that will be attributed to each one of them.

For example, consider this title tag: Creative Blog Tips – a great place for creative, efficient and best blogging tips and tutorials and many more things related to weblog! Such a long title tag will get little value from search engines. So make it short. Do not use more than five keywords in the title tag. Make the above tag like this one: Creative Blog Tips and Tutorials.

Some webmasters use title tag that is not related to their blog or website. This is really a bad practice. They think that an exciting and attractive title tag will bring them a lot of traffic. They might be successful to some extent but will fail to retain those visitors. If your title tag is not related toyour content than search engines will also punish you and you may not get a good result from search engines.
